I know what you must be thinking…are we not tired of eating? HeHe No! So for this edition of #CAFÉSUNDAYS the team stopped by at the newly opened Waffle Stop. This café is located in the Dunes centre. There is an outdoor seating area and an indoor one. As we had just come from the gym, we decided to enjoy the morning breeze and sit outside (LOL just had to let you know we burn the calories…and then have waffles after). The indoor seating area however, is perfect if you would like to watch your food being prepared.
Generally, the café is pretty basic. It wasn’t too colourful but the minimalism works for it. There wasn’t really a ‘vibe’ per se but it was a nice chill spot for breakfast on a Saturday morning. We were however one of the only people there that morning which was a bit surprising seeing as Abuja people love new places.
The staff attended to us rather promptly which was a good start to our experience. We were handed 2 menus, one being for the Waffle stop and the other for the Dunes grill. Both restaurants seem to operate simultaneously from the same kitchen (major plus as it gives you more options). After placing our orders everything took about 20 minutes to come. One of us ordered tea, and when this was brought we were shocked at how small the quantity of milk was. However, once we complained about it the friendly waiter gladly added more to the cup. The chef preparing the waffles and pancakes decided to wait till both were done to bring it out, which meant the pancakes were already cold before getting to the table (‘In-house sweet tooth’ ordered the pancakes so you know she threw a fit…shhh). We complained about the temperature and as with the milk the staff kindly offered to make a new batch. This was very shocking as in Nigeria good customer service is VERY hard to find (NOTE: BY VERY I MEAN ON THE SCALE OF 1 DOLLAR EVER REACHING N150 AGAIN…yes it is that hard). Overall the service was commendable and quite fast.
The prices were very reasonable however, we found the drinks prices to be a bit unnecessary considering the quantity being provided.
Waffle Stop Orders
- Pancake with strawberries and Oreos
- Waffle with strawberries, maple syrup, bananas and whipped cream
Dunes Grill Orders
- Shawarma Chicken (best believe we had a debate with our returning chatty friend as to whether it should have just been called chicken shawarma but hey no be we write the menu)
- Chicken Taouk
- Iced Tea
The first pancakes that arrived cold looked very pleasing but as previously mentioned, due to the temperature no one tasted them. The second batch however seemed a bit rushed and burnt on the outside but slightly uncooked on the inside (we’ll let this slide because we assume the Chef was trying to get this new order out in time before everyone else had finished eating). The waffles were really nice but they could have been a little more generous with the syrup.
I am going to bunch the shawarma chicken and chicken taouk together because they were literally the same thing with different names (I kid you not). Both these sandwiches were filled with chicken, garlic sauce, chips and pickles all grilled in flat Lebanese bread. Everything inside the sandwich was fine and everything outside was WRONG. The bread had been placed under the grill for so long that it was hard to chew and swallow. To be honest there wasn’t any satisfaction in eating this sandwich and the whole team agreed that we wouldn’t be ordering either again.
The tea was your regular lipton tea with an unnecessary Abuja restaurant price tag. Similarly, the iced tea was also made from lipton but tasted like it had been baptised in sugar (jedi jedi kind of sugar mate). It was too sweet to even drink and after several failed attempts at adding water to it we decided that as our snapchat celebrity Bobrisky lives by, “we cannot come and kill ourselves”.
Would we return? Yes
